Again in 3 2 1
November 9, 2010
New music makes a sad girl happy and a lonely boy loved. True story! But for real I love new music and today I am listening to a few new bands that will be playing at SXSW this spring!
Candy Claws have sweet voices that are almost like a whisper but a perfect one. The sounds they mix into their songs sound natural and I love it! Their videos are somewhat trippy but in a fun way. I would definitely play them again.
I heard Babe Rainbow and thought this mute is the shit! Straight electronic funky beats of awesomeness! Can’t compare it to anything I have heard so don’t even know where to begin to describe it…this is a good thing though!
Micachu which should not be mistaken for the Pokeman are like old new. Their sound is old distorted but with high guitars and when remixed have a badass beat! They sound different on every song one minute they are all electricky the other I think they are modern beatles. They have it all!
The War on Drugs sounds like they are using lots of awesome instruments behind the regular ones like I am pretty sure an organ was used at some point. It all goes together and combines for a folky on some songs and electricky on others kinda overall sound.
PS I Love You sound super grungy on some songs with lots of distortion and on others sad and poetic. Great guitars! Fav band of the day for sure! This is what I would play in the soundtrack of my 6th street adventures.
On a side note everyone has an EP these days!
A few bands SXSW 2011
November 8, 2010
Starting to listen to some of the 2011 bands and getting excited about the pure awesomeness I am hearing! I went to SXSW last year and used Austin 360 to RSVP to everything and waited in some of the longest lines of my life. It was defiantly worth it though. I know that the key to seeing everyone you want is to map it out early so….I am starting early because I need to know who I want to see before I can do any of that mapping business.
Alcoholic Faith Mission…like em want to see em! They have an upbeat sound that at first is acoustic but then turns more electric. Some of their songs are pure acoustic and remind me of a band I have been listening to for years but have sadly not.
A Place to Bury Strangers has a unique sound with distorted guitar and fast electronic beats you have to play at full volume. Described as experimental and living up to it for reals!
I think Kids of 88 are my favorite I have heard so far maybe because they remind me of my favorite band passion pit. Electric and high-pitched vocals are what I am loving right now! Their song “My House” is one I will be blasting on the next epic adventure to ensure a good time for all!
Listening to the first song by Small Black I felt like it should be set to some kaleidoscope images in neon colors…very trippy but in a good way! I liked the psychedelic sounds and keyboard on highest notes possible. They remind me of Animal Collective but with more words. Love them can’t wait to see them!
Art vs. Science uses distorted low guitars and dudes in sort of high sort of low voices. I liked that they used low guitars and low electrics it went well together. Most bands are going with high-pitched everything and these guys balanced high and low for a different electric vibe.
These are just a few of what will be playing in the spring. I hope to listen to all so I can get an idea of who I want to see!! SXSW 2011 is gonna be awesome!

KTSW rocks in a new semester
August 31, 2010
Texas States own radio station KTSW 89.9 has started the year off like a mixed tape from Barney Stinson. It starts out awesome and gets progressively more awesome, which is getting me all pumped for the first lunchbox of the year. This year KTSW decided that in addition to the epic bookstore blowout, who doesn’t like free cd’s when spending $300 on textbooks, they would have an off campus dance party at Tantra. I was a little sceptical at first but had soooo much fun. They had awesome DJ’s, GoGo dancers and donuts!
So I started thinking about how if this year is like a mix tape of Barney’s then the best is yet to come! This Thursday right outside LBJSC KTSW will host its first lunchbox of the year. Of course the event will have the usual free everything policy aka free stickers cd’s posters music and PIZZA and of course the staffs smiles are free of charge as well. The event starts at 11 with the bands starting at 12. Thursday will feature Halleyanna Finlay who is amazing and Rio Specter who I am excited to hear for the first time!
Support you local station and get free stuff! Add it to your Facebook events! Follow @ktsw_899 and @ktswpromotions on twitter! You never know when they will be giving away awesome stuff!

C3′s new site
August 25, 2010
So for those of you on top of the ACL news, C3′s new site and offers are old news but for those who don’t yet know you can get some good deals on concert tix! For me the biggest problem is either price or tickets selling out to soon. Well now you can sign up for their email list and get updates on all the concerts and give aways and such, but it will also send you updates on concert pre-sales! Wait what? Yah I love pre-sales because you can get access to tickets before anyone else and not have to worry about being sold out.
On C3′s new site, I am pretty sure it’s new, you can find out about all the ACL official after shows, pre shows and after parties! That is some pretty good information when planing out you ACL weekend because you don’t want to waste any time worrying about where you need to get to next. The pre sales apply to the ACL official shows so your ACL fun doesn’t have to end when the festival is over.
Right now I am deciding between Monsters of Folk and Sonic Youth after shows. I really want to see Monsters of Folk because I love Conor from the Bright Eyes and I like his new stuff also and then there is Sonic Youth who I also love…decisions decisions!
Below is the link to sign up for the Email list to get you pre-sale codes sent to your Email account!
Texas State music dept!
July 18, 2010
You don’t have to go to Austin to find good music, in fact you don’t even have to leave campus. In the Texas State music building there is constantly people practicing and performing pretty much at any time of the day, and at night they put on some good concerts. Being a music minor I had many chances to get extra credit and go see some of the shows. Of course the music profs are going to support the department music students but I think it was a great experience, and I think what the profs do is a good idea. If you are taking music classes you prob like/love music of any kind, and getting the chance to get extra credit is always a plus. Some profs from other departments will also offer extra credit to their students which brings in a variety of different musical interests.
They have everything from salsa bands to classical guitar soloists. The concerts are usually either really cheap or free. You can see more performances around final exams when the seniors have to do their recitals. My TA Arthur did a few different performances in the span of a week giving us options of times and places.
Moral of the story support your fellow bobcats! Below is a link to the TX State music dept homepage where you can find info on future shows.
Tokyo Police and Passion Pit rape Stubbs!
June 19, 2010
The day was hot, the hipsters were monotone, and Stubbs was all lights glow sticks and crazy jams! When we got there Ty and I were sandwiched in between what looked like a hemp rainbow hat wearing hipster and a wannabe cruise directing frat daddy. We knew the night would be epic when the frat daddy said and I quote “Like ten years ago we would be taking pictures with our minds and now it’s like all about the Iphone and in ten years when I am remembering Passion Pit I will remember the Iphone and my pictures.” Well I am pretty sure ten years ago we had cameras sir frat but what a good observation. With all this technology I got some great pics and took a few videos on my flip.
When Tokyo Police went on I was pretty excited. It was still light out so you could see the sweat pouring off their faces. They played a few songs and the crowd was eating it up. I wrote off Tokyo Police a few years ago when I felt like they weren’t going anywhere, but after last night I change my mind. They were pretty epic. The crowd was packed in tight, and a little into Tokyo Polices set glow sticks started to be thrown through the air.
Passion Pit tried to build suspense by taking way to long to get on stage…it made people mad more than anxious. Anywho it didn’t matter in the end bc they were amazing as usual. The guy sang like a girl, the electric sounds got people jumping, and the lights could have given a small child a seizure…in other words I LOVED IT! As soon as they got on stage people were screaming and it was like a canon of glow sticks was shot through the air they were everywhere!!
Next time they are in town go see them or you will be sad you missed out!
Videos all right here!!
Music Festivals all over!
June 1, 2010
I know it’s 2010 and the whole traveling around with your fav bands thing is dead but I couldn’t help and notice that when I am at concerts I always run into people who traveled by plane train and bus to get to a show thousands of miles away. It got me thinking that this is my last summer as a college student and probably my last chance to travel for a festival. With this in mind I though what would be my first choice to attend this summer music wise and how can I make it happen…well Boonaroo is close to Texas and is having a bitchin lineup this year so I thought I can make that happen. Now I know I am not made of money but at Boonaroo you can work for your tickets! You do 3 six-hour shifts and free food and all that fun stuff. Bring your own tent is probably a smart idea. The best part is applications are still open! http://www.bonnaroo.com/festival/volunteer.aspx
Now maybe that isn’t your thing well I found some other awesome festival options…Lollapalooza and Pitchfork Music Festival in Chicago, Nateva in Oxford, ME, All Tomorrow’s Parties and Mountain Jam in NY, Mile High Music Festival in Denver, Bumbershoot in Seattle, and Outside Lands in Cali! Rothbury is canceled for this summer but with all the options of music festivals it’s all good!
Houston Local Summerfest is happening the weekend and will headline The Flaming Lips and Girl Talk…I will prob be there when I get off work and be rocking out!

New Media project
May 7, 2010
So for my #smwork class I decided to write my final paper for a job interview I never got. That’s what I get for being overconfident and thinking this job is mine!! But anywho I decided to write about the Texas State Health Center and what new media tactics I would use to get them better business.
I wanted to create a Twitter, and update the Facebook pages for the center and make them more interactive with the students. In my opinion the biggest problem the health center has is a lack of awareness amongst students, and by using more student friendly sites I think word of the center will travel faster.
I also wanted to use things like Skype for on call nurses as well as the usual method of phones, because with Skype the nurses can get a visual of what is going on with the patient.
Gowalla was another idea. Using the game to get students to check in to the health center and rewarding them with prizes will increase talk about the center. College students love free stuff and Gowalla has gained popularity, combined it will drive more student awareness and get people talking about the health center.
That is just a few of my ideas, with help from my class and bff Will Burney. Even though the job isn’t mine I am still looking for a good internship or student PR position. If any readers know of any open positions HALLA!
